Beautifully complex experience of aromas of honey and precious wild flowers. This tea brings memorable performance to all senses.

Starting with slightly cooler water, first few infusions are light and very floral. It almost reminds some high quality white teas.

Later infusions start to show some power and darker notes which a getting stronger and stronger with each infusion. At the last stage using boiling water, tea is much darker and sweet taste appears. It almost feels like different tea from the beginning. It can stand surprisingly many infusions.

DongFangMeiRen (東方美人) also known sa Oriental Beauty or BaiHao Oolong is one of most famous and unique teas of Taiwan.

I’ts uniqueness comes from the little bugs, (Jacobiasca formosana) hardly visible to naked eye. These bugs are sucking the juice from the fresh tea leaves still attached to tea plant. They are most active during summer months therefore Oriental Beauty is mostly produced in July but winter harvest is also common and can be as charming.

After young leaves are bitten by tea bugs, plants are protecting itself by releasing nutrients and hormones to the young leaves. This results in its thickening and also in producing new complex aromas of honey and essential oils.

This also inspired many farmers in Taiwan to stop spraying pesticides on plants and let them to be bitten. Positive trend that unburdened nature and gave us new interesting teas like KuiFei (Concubine Oolong) in Dong Ding or MiXiangHong (honey scent red) from Taiwan east coast.

Oriental beauty originates in Pei Pu, Hsinchu county but nowadays it’s proudly produced also in Pinglin, Taoyuan and Miaoli County.

There are yearly competitions to promote the high quality and I offer tea from 5th annual whole Taiwan Oriental Beauty Competition held in 2015. It was awarded with 2 out of 3 flowers.
